This guide will walk you through building a simple but functional edge banding trimmer using readily available parts. Remember, safety is paramount. Always wear appropriate eye protection and take precautions when working with sharp tools. This project involves using power tools; if you're not comfortable operating them, seek assistance from someone experienced.

Materials You Will Need:

* Base: A sturdy piece of wood (approx. 10" x 6" x 1"). Plywood or hardwood works well. The stability of your base is critical for accurate trimming.

* Guide Fence: A piece of straight, smooth wood (approx. 8" x 2" x 1/2"). Ensure it’s perfectly square and free of any warping. This fence guides the edge banding for consistent cuts.

* Router Base: A small, handheld router base (variable speed is recommended). Look for models with depth adjustments, ideally with fine-tuning capabilities.

* Router Bit: A flush trim bit with a bearing. The bearing will ride along the edge of the guide fence, ensuring consistent depth of cut. Choose a bit with a diameter appropriate for your edge banding thickness. A bit that is too large will create unwanted grooves.

* Clamps: Several strong clamps to securely attach the guide fence to the base.

* Screws: Wood screws suitable for attaching the fence and other components.

* Sandpaper: Various grits for smoothing and finishing.

* Wood Glue (optional): For added security in attaching the fence.

* Measuring Tape and Pencil: For precise measurements and marking.

Building Your Trimmer:

1. Prepare the Base: Clean and sand your base piece to remove any imperfections. This ensures a stable and level working surface.

2. Attach the Guide Fence: Measure and mark the position for the guide fence on the base. The fence should be positioned parallel to the edge where the router will be passing. This distance will depend on the size of your router base and the thickness of your edge banding. Generally, you want enough clearance for the router bit and bearing to move freely without interference. Secure the fence to the base using screws and optionally wood glue. Ensure the fence is perfectly perpendicular (90 degrees) to the base. Clamping it firmly in place before screwing is highly recommended for accuracy.

3. Test the Setup: Before attaching the router, carefully test the alignment of your guide fence to ensure it’s perfectly straight and parallel to the edge. A slight misalignment will result in uneven trimming.

4. Attach the Router Base: Most router bases have mounting plates that can be secured to the base. Position it so the bit is in alignment with the guide fence. Make sure the bit is slightly lower than the surface of the guide fence (this will be adjusted later for fine tuning).

5. Test Cut (Crucial): Perform test cuts on scrap wood with edge banding similar to what you will be using. Adjust the height of the router bit until you achieve a clean, flush cut. The bearing on the flush trim bit should ride smoothly along the guide fence. Too high and you’ll cut too deep; too low and you won’t trim the excess banding.

6. Refinement and Finishing: Once you have a consistent and clean cut, sand the base and any exposed areas to remove splinters and improve the overall appearance. Apply a finish (optional) for protection and aesthetics.

Using Your DIY Trimmer:

Always start with test cuts on scrap material before working on your actual project. Feed the edge banded piece slowly and steadily against the guide fence, keeping firm pressure to maintain contact with the bearing. The router should do most of the work. Avoid excessive force, which can cause chipping or damage to the workpiece.
