The Opportunity: Senior Recycling & Formulation Engineer

As our Senior Recycling & Formulation Engineer, you will be instrumental in developing, implementing, and optimizing processes for the effective recycling and re-integration of post-industrial edge banding waste into new product formulations. This is a hands-on and strategic role, requiring a blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application. You will lead projects from conception to completion, working closely with our R&D, Production, Quality Assurance, and Procurement teams. Your mission will be to transform what was once considered waste into a valuable, high-performance input, without compromising the superior quality and aesthetic appeal that our customers expect from Evergreen Edge Solutions.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Material Characterization and Analysis:
* Conduct comprehensive physical, chemical, and rheological analysis of various edge banding waste streams (PVC, ABS, PP) to understand their composition, degradation levels, and potential for recycling. This includes using techniques such as FTIR, DSC, TGA, MFI, and density measurements.
* Develop and implement standardized protocols for sorting, cleaning, and pre-processing waste materials to ensure consistent quality for subsequent recycling steps.
* Identify and mitigate potential contaminants that could affect the quality of recycled materials.

2. Formulation Development and Optimization:
* Design and develop innovative polymer formulations that successfully incorporate high percentages of recycled content without compromising the mechanical properties, color stability, UV resistance, adhesion, and overall performance of the final edge banding product.
* Experiment with various additives (stabilizers, plasticizers, impact modifiers, processing aids, pigments) to compensate for potential property degradation in recycled polymers and to enhance desired characteristics.
* Utilize advanced compounding techniques, primarily twin-screw extrusion, to achieve homogeneous blends and optimize polymer matrix properties.
* Continuously refine existing formulations to improve cost-effectiveness, processing efficiency, and product sustainability.

3. Process Engineering and Optimization for Recycling:
* Oversee the operation, maintenance, and optimization of recycling equipment, including shredders, granulators, pulverizers, agglomerators, and compounding extruders.
* Develop and implement efficient processing parameters for converting waste into reusable pellets or compounds.
* Troubleshoot process issues related to recycling and compounding, identifying root causes and implementing effective solutions.
* Collaborate with the production team to integrate recycled materials seamlessly into existing extrusion lines for edge banding production.

4. Quality Assurance and Testing of Recycled Materials:
* Establish rigorous quality control procedures for all incoming waste materials, intermediate recycled compounds, and final edge banding products containing recycled content.
* Conduct extensive performance testing on new formulations, including tensile strength, impact resistance, hardness, abrasion resistance, heat distortion temperature, and color matching.
* Ensure all products meet internal quality standards, industry specifications, and relevant international certifications (e.g., REACH, RoHS, ISO).
* Document test results thoroughly and maintain comprehensive records for traceability and continuous improvement.

5. Research & Development and Innovation:
* Stay abreast of the latest advancements in polymer recycling technologies, sustainable materials, and additive developments.
* Explore novel methods for depolymerization, chemical recycling, or advanced mechanical recycling to broaden our capabilities.
* Lead or participate in R&D projects aimed at developing new eco-friendly edge banding products or improving the sustainability profile of existing ones.
* Evaluate new raw materials and technologies from suppliers for potential integration into our recycling efforts.

6. Cross-functional Collaboration and Project Management:
* Work closely with the Production Department to ensure smooth integration of recycled content and to optimize manufacturing efficiency.
* Collaborate with the R&D team on long-term material science projects and product development initiatives.
* Interface with the Quality Assurance department to uphold the highest product standards.
* Partner with Procurement to identify and source suitable waste streams or virgin material alternatives.
* Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely execution and achievement of objectives within budget.

7. Safety, Environmental Compliance, and Training:
* Adhere to and promote the highest standards of workplace safety and environmental protection in all recycling and compounding operations.
* Ensure compliance with all local, national, and international environmental regulations pertaining to waste management and polymer processing.
* Provide technical guidance and training to junior engineers, technicians, and production staff on recycling processes, material handling, and quality control.

Required Qualifications:

* Education: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Polymer Science, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a closely related field from an accredited university. A Ph.D. is a significant advantage.
* Experience: Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in polymer processing, compounding, and recycling, specifically within the plastics manufacturing industry.
* Demonstrated expertise in the formulation and processing of PVC, ABS, and PP polymers is essential.
* Proven track record in developing and optimizing recycling processes for post-industrial or post-consumer plastic waste.
* Hands-on experience with extrusion and compounding equipment (single-screw and twin-screw extruders) is a must.
* Prior experience in the edge banding, profile extrusion, or related polymer film/sheet industries is highly preferred.
* Technical Skills:
