Advantages: Good for curves and irregular shapes, strong initial bond, relatively easy to use without specialized machinery.
Disadvantages: Solvent-based (fumes, flammability), precise application needed to avoid bubbles, difficult to reposition once contact is made, and less efficient for large-scale production.

3. PVA / Wood Glues

4. Pre-Glued Edge Banding

2. Edge Banding Preparation (Our Product)

3. Workshop Environment

The Application Process: Mastering the Machine and the Manual Touch

1. Automatic Edge Banding Machines


Modern edge banders are highly sophisticated, but proper setup and maintenance are critical.
Glue Pot Temperature: Maintain the exact temperature recommended by the glue manufacturer (e.g., 180-200°C for EVA, 120-150°C for PUR). Too low, and the glue won't flow and wet out properly; too high, and it can degrade, discolor, or burn, reducing bond strength.
Glue Roller Adjustment: The glue roller must apply an even, consistent film of glue to the panel edge. Feed Rate: Synchronize the machine's feed rate with the glue's open time. If the feed rate is too slow, the glue can cool and skin over before the edge band is applied, leading to a weak bond.
Trimming and Finishing Units: Ensure these units are sharp, clean, and correctly adjusted to trim the excess edge banding flush with the panel. Dull cutters can chip or tear the edge banding, compromising the finished look and potentially the bond integrity near the edge.
Machine Maintenance: Regular cleaning of the glue pot, rollers, and applicators is essential, especially with PUR glues, to prevent cured glue buildup that can impede performance.

2. Manual Edge Banding (Contact Cement or Iron-on)


For smaller projects or curved edges, manual application is still common.
Contact Cement Method:

Clean and prepare both the panel edge and the back of the edge band.
Apply a thin, even coat of contact cement to both surfaces using a brush or roller. Ensure full coverage without puddling.
Allow the glue to "flash off" (dry to the touch) according to the manufacturer's instructions, typically 10-20 minutes. This is crucial for the adhesive to become tacky.
Carefully align the edge band with the panel edge. Once contact is made, the bond is instant and permanent.
Apply firm, even pressure along the entire length of the edge band using a J-roller or rubber mallet to ensure maximum contact and bond strength.
Trim excess carefully with a sharp knife or router.


Iron-on (Pre-Glued) Method:

Clean the panel edge thoroughly.
Position the pre-glued edge band along the panel edge.
Using a household iron or specialized edge banding iron set to a medium-hot temperature, press down firmly and slowly slide along the edge band. The heat will melt the pre-applied glue.

Poor Initial Tack (Edge band slides or moves after application):

Solution: Check glue and panel temperatures, select a glue with faster tack or optimize feed speed, increase pressure.
