Making Straight Edge Banding with Handheld Tools393
Panel edging is a versatile material that can be used to finish the edges of furniture, countertops, and other wood projects. It comes in a variety of materials, including wood, veneer, metal, and plastic. Straight edgebanding is attached to the edge of a workpiece using adhesive and pressure. In this guide, we will show you how to apply straight edge banding using handheld tools.
Materials and Tools
To apply straight edge banding, you will need the following materials and tools:
Straight edge banding
Carpenter's glue
Clamping blocks
Flush trim router bit
Router
Sandpaper
Utility knife
Tape measure
Pencil
Step 1: Cut the Edge Banding
Measure the length of the edge that you need to cover and cut the edge banding to the desired length. Make sure to cut the edge banding slightly longer than the edge so that you have some extra to trim later.
Step 2: Apply the Glue
Apply a thin layer of carpenter's glue to the back of the edge banding. Use a brush or roller to apply the glue evenly. Do not apply too much glue, as this will make it difficult to clamp the edge banding in place.
Step 3: Clamp the Edge Banding
Align the edge banding with the edge of the workpiece and clamp it in place using clamping blocks. Make sure that the edge banding is flush with the edge of the workpiece. Use enough clamps to ensure that the edge banding is held securely in place.
Step 4: Trim the Edge Banding
Once the glue has dried, you can trim the excess edge banding. To do this, use a flush trim router bit in a router. Run the router along the edge of the workpiece, and the flush trim router bit will trim the excess edge banding flush with the surface of the workpiece.
Step 5: Sand the Edge Banding
Sand the edge banding smooth using sandpaper. Start with a coarse-grit sandpaper and gradually work your way to a finer-grit sandpaper. Sand the edge banding until it is smooth and flush with the surface of the workpiece.
Step 6: Finish the Edge Banding
If desired, you can finish the edge banding with a clear finish, such as polyurethane or lacquer. This will help to protect the edge banding from wear and tear and give it a polished look.
Tips
For best results, use a sharp utility knife to cut the edge banding. A dull knife will tear the edge banding and make it difficult to apply.
If the glue starts to dry before you have finished applying the edge banding, you can use a damp cloth to reactivate the glue.
If you are applying edge banding to a curved surface, you can use a heat gun to soften the edge banding and make it more pliable.
Once the edge banding is applied, be sure to clamp it in place until the glue has completely dried. This will ensure that the edge banding is securely attached to the workpiece.
