Traditional Edge Banding Mortise and Tenon Joint292
Traditional edge banding mortise and tenon joint is a technique used to join two pieces of wood together at a 90-degree angle. This joint is commonly used in the construction of furniture, such as cabinets, drawers, and tables. The mortise and tenon joint is a very strong and durable joint, and it is also relatively easy to make.
To make a traditional edge banding mortise and tenon joint, you will need the following tools:
Table saw
Router
Chisel
Hammer
Clamps
The first step is to cut the mortise. The mortise is a rectangular hole that is cut into the edge of one of the pieces of wood. The mortise should be slightly smaller than the tenon, which is the protruding tongue that is cut into the edge of the other piece of wood. The mortise should also be cut deep enough so that the tenon will fit snugly into it and the edge banding will fit snugly into the inside of the mortise to conceal the joint.
Once the mortise is cut, you can cut the tenon. The tenon is a rectangular tongue that is cut into the edge of the other piece of wood. The tenon should be slightly larger than the mortise so that it will fit snugly into it and the edge banding will fit snugly into the inside of the mortise to conceal the joint.
Once the mortise and tenon are cut, you can glue the two pieces of wood together. Apply a thin layer of glue to the tenon and insert it into the mortise. Use a hammer to tap the joint together until it is flush. Wipe off any excess glue that squeezes out of the joint.
Once the glue is dry, you can clamp the joint together. Use clamps to apply even pressure on all sides of the joint. Allow the glue to dry for at least 24 hours before removing the clamps.
Sand the edge banding of the joint smooth and apply the finish of your choice.
Traditional edge banding mortise and tenon joint is a very strong and durable joint that is relatively easy to make. This joint is commonly used in the construction of furniture, such as cabinets, drawers, and tables.
