DIY Edge Banding Trimming and Rounding Over242
Introduction
Edge banding is a thin strip of material applied to the exposed edges of plywood, particleboard, or MDF to cover the raw edge and improve its appearance. It comes in various materials, including wood veneer, melamine, and PVC, and is available in different colors and finishes to match your project.
After applying edge banding, you may need to trim and round over the edges for a professional finish. This process requires a few simple tools and can be easily done at home with a little practice.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Handheld router with a flush trim bit
Roundover bit
Safety glasses
Vacuum cleaner or dust mask
Sandpaper (optional)
Step 1: Trim the Edge Banding Flush
Attach a flush trim bit to your router. Set the depth of the bit to the thickness of the edge banding.
Wear safety glasses and a dust mask. Secure the workpiece to a stable surface. Hold the router firmly with both hands and rest the base of the router against the edge banding.
Move the router along the edge, guiding it with one hand while keeping the base flat against the banding. The flush trim bit will remove any excess edge banding that extends beyond the edge of the substrate.
Step 2: Round Over the Edges
Replace the flush trim bit with a roundover bit. Select a bit with a radius that suits the desired roundover size.
Set the depth of the roundover bit to half the thickness of the edge banding. If the edge banding is 1/4 inch thick, set the bit depth to 1/8 inch.
Hold the router firmly and guide it along the edge of the banding, applying light pressure. The roundover bit will create a smooth, rounded edge on the banding.
Step 3: Sanding (Optional)
If desired, you can sand the rounded edges for a smoother finish. Use fine-grit sandpaper and gently sand the edges in the direction of the grain.
Remove any dust from the edges using a vacuum cleaner or damp cloth.
Tips
Use a sharp router bit. A dull bit will tear or chip the edge banding.
Move the router at a steady pace. Moving too quickly can cause tear-out, while moving too slowly can burn the edge banding.
If you're not comfortable using a handheld router, you can take your workpiece to a professional cabinet maker or woodworking shop for trimming and rounding over.
Conclusion
Trimming and rounding over edge banding is a straightforward process that can enhance the appearance of your furniture project. With the right tools and techniques, you can achieve a professional-looking finish in no time.
