How to Band an Arc-Shaped Strip with Edge Banding22
Edge banding is an essential part of furniture making, as it provides a finished and professional look to the edges of wood panels. While straight edges are relatively easy to band, arc-shaped strips can be more challenging.
There are a few different ways to band an arc-shaped strip, but the most common method is to use a banding machine. A banding machine is a specialized tool that applies heat and pressure to the edge banding material, causing it to adhere to the wood panel. The machine can be adjusted to accommodate different thicknesses and shapes of edge banding, and it can also be used to apply banding to curved edges.
If you do not have a banding machine, you can also band an arc-shaped strip by hand. This method is more time-consuming, but it can be done with a few simple tools. To band an arc-shaped strip by hand, you will need:
Edge banding material
A sharp knife
A straight edge
A heat gun
A roller
To begin, cut the edge banding material to the desired length. Then, use a sharp knife to score the back of the edge banding material, along the length of the strip. This will help the adhesive to adhere to the wood panel.
Next, apply a thin layer of adhesive to the back of the edge banding material. Be sure to apply the adhesive evenly, and avoid getting any adhesive on the front of the edge banding material.
Now, place the edge banding material on the edge of the wood panel. Use a straight edge to align the edge banding material, and then use a roller to press the edge banding material into place. Be sure to apply even pressure, and work from the center of the strip outwards.
Once the edge banding material is in place, use a heat gun to heat the edge banding material. The heat will cause the adhesive to melt, and the edge banding material will adhere to the wood panel.
Finally, use a sharp knife to trim any excess edge banding material. Be careful not to cut into the wood panel.
With a little practice, you can easily band an arc-shaped strip with edge banding. This method is a great way to add a finished and professional look to your furniture projects.
