Edgebanding Placement Guide for Cabinetry5

Edgebanding plays a crucial role in the aesthetic appeal and durability of cabinetry. It covers the exposed edges of plywood or other core materials, providing a smooth, finished look. To ensure proper adhesion and longevity, the edgebanding must be placed accurately.

Determining the Overhang

The first step is to determine the desired overhang, which refers to the distance that the edgebanding extends beyond the substrate. A typical overhang range is between 1/32" (0.8 mm) and 1/16" (1.6 mm).

The recommended overhang for solid wood edgebanding is 1/32"-1/16". For veneer edgebanding, a smaller overhang of 1/64"-1/32" (0.4-0.8 mm) is preferred.

Positioning the Edgebander

Once the overhang is determined, position the edgebander on the workpiece. The edgebander should be aligned parallel to the edge of the substrate, with the cutting head positioned directly over the edge.

Adjust the height of the cutting head so that it touches the top surface of the edgebanding. This ensures that the edgebanding is flush with the workpiece.

Applying the Edgebanding

Use a clean, dry cloth to remove any dust or debris from the edge of the workpiece. Apply a thin layer of a suitable adhesive, such as contact cement or hot melt adhesive, to the edge of the substrate.

Press the edgebanding firmly into place, ensuring that it aligns with the edge of the substrate. Hold the edgebanding in place with clamps or adhesive tape.

Trimming the Edgebanding

After the adhesive has cured, trim the excess edgebanding flush with the workpiece. Use a sharp utility knife or a flush trim router to achieve a clean, professional finish.

To create a beveled edge, use a chamfering bit on a router to angle the edge of the edgebanding. This adds an elegant touch and reduces the risk of chipping or peeling.

Additional Tips

For curved or irregular surfaces, use flexible edgebanding to conform to the shape. Pre-glued edgebanding is also available for easier and faster application.

If the workpiece is particularly thick, it may be necessary to apply multiple layers of edgebanding to achieve the desired thickness and durability.

Always test the adhesive and cutting tools on a scrap piece of material before applying it to the actual workpiece.

By following these steps and using high-quality materials, you can achieve durable and aesthetically pleasing edgebanding that enhances the overall appearance and functionality of your cabinetry.
